Tim on: Revenue Creation
Expand Preschool Program
Preschool classes generate revenue for the district. But, they are currently “over capacity”. They typically fill up and become wait listed up to 8 months in advance of their start dates. As such, the Mounds View School District should look to expand these programs to other schools beyond Snail Lake and Pike Lake, ideally to schools that are near the borders of other districts. This would achieve 2 things: First, more families could take advantage of them because they would be closer to more residents. Second, this may help stabilize/increase enrollment levels since many of students in the preschool programs are families that reside outside the district (but near it). We should take advantage of this by placing Mounds View Preschools near other school districts since it could also increase our open enrollment population (which also generates more revenue for the district).
Rent Out “Open Space”
The school district could increase their revenue by renting out open, off-hour, and summer space. If you’ve ever walked through a school after classes are out, you know that they are almost always empty. Let’s take advantage of any open capacity and monetize it. We should also consider renting out or leasing open rooms during the summer, and also look at our open outdoor areas. We have many fields in the Mounds View school district that could be leased out to recreational co-ed soccer leagues, Ultimate Frisbee tournaments/practice, and various other sport leagues.
